The Story of the Shepherd Boy

Deep within the enchanting rolling fields, lived a young shepherd. His existence was essentially pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to care for his herd of rams.

Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes among the lone tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day after day, watching over his wards instilled in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.

However, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome plan.

Stories of wild beasts preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.

One morning he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.

The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This game laughed for a couple of more days. But, one day, a real wolf did attack the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, click here he went back to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
